Cultural Heritage Studies  

Through multiple ways such as lectures, studies, communications and discussions, this module provides students with an overview of the research fields of Cultural Heritage Studies from different perspectives under the guidance of museology, archaeology, and theories of cultural construction. It enables students to deconstruct the development courses of human history and civilization and understand the role of cultural heritage in national cultural confidence and identity, as well as the value of production and material and non-material activities in the process of social civilization construction. An in-depth understanding of cultural heritage can promote students’ critical thinking skills in cultural heritage protection, and equip them with a forward-looking vision in face of the cultural hybridity under the background of globalization, so as to make contributes to the inheritance, protection and revitalization of cultural heritage in a sustainable way.

Anthropology  

Anthropology is an independent discipline studying human biological and cultural characteristics. Unique social, political, and economic systems, folklore, and religious systems have been formed as a result of human beings’ adaptation to diverse environments in group life which are significant entry points for exploring the diversity of human civilizations and cultural relativities during different periods. Through lectures, discussions, studies and academic exchanges, this module enables students to know the fields involved in anthropological research, and the processes of evolution, integration, struggle, conflict, mediation or absorption among humans and social systems. It promotes students to conduct in-depth analyses of cross-cultural and gender-related phenomena and problems through a comprehensive investigation of literature in various fields, so they can gain a more extensive understanding of the impact of human behavior on the development of human society.

Sino-Western Cultural Exchange  

This module is an introduction to the history of cultural exchange between China and the West. Through examining the history of cultural connections and interactions between China and the West from prehistoric times to the Ming and Qing dynasties, it aims to reveal the world’s influence on the course of Chinese civilization and China’s contribution to the development of world civilization. In this module, students will understand the basic methods and content of the study of the history of cultural exchange between China and the West, and learn to use archaeological and documentary evidence to analyze and discuss academic propositions related to cultural exchange between China and the West.

Thesis  

(1) Students shall draw on the achievements of the modules of the first academic year and write an original thesis under the guidance of her/his PhD supervisor and pass the public defense. (2) The dissertation must be original and professional, and must also be rigorous and composed of introduction/preface, literature review/dialogue, research methods, research results/discoveries, analysis and discussion, explanation, conclusion, shortcomings and prospects, etc. (3) The public defense is the last stage of the entire dissertation, and passing this stage is the completion of the doctoral program. (4) The academic achievements should further enrich the development and research in Macao and beyond in the cultural heritage study, anthropology and social sciences, and take the contribution to relevant research in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as important tasks.

This module allows students to master the characteristics of intangible cultural heritage through multiple methods such as lectures, research, exchanges and discussions, and uses special topics as a breakthrough point to analyze the symbiosis and evolution relationship between intangible cultural heritage and society, deconstructing the shaping process of cultural systems, social value and cultural identity, so as to reflect on the practical methods of protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage in contemporary society.

Students will learn research methods and tools specific to studying cultural heritage and gain an in-depth understanding through practical case studies and site visits that showcase the impact of cultural heritage on society. Additionally, this module incorporates international comparisons and cross-cultural analysis to further explore topics related to social development and cultural heritage.

Special Topics in History and Culture of Macao

This module focuses on the history of Macao over the 400 years from the arrival of Portuguese to the East in 1500 to China and Portugal Joint Declaration on the Question of Macao in 1987, which is divided into five parts in line with time and political development to demonstrate. Students can have a clear and holistic understanding of the context and outline of Macao history through the narration of major historical events in the five stages.
